Kingman has a rich history, and there are plenty of attractions and entertainment to be found in the city. From interesting days out at the Historic Route 66 Museum, to eating at great restaurants like Redneck’s Southern Pit BBQ or Dora’s Beale Street Deli, you can always find something to do while staying in the city. Kingman is also lucky to be situated close by to some great attractions and places to visit, so if you feel like going out on a day trip, you have lots of options to choose from.
Grand Canyon Skywalk
Kingman is the closest major city to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a horseshoe shaped platform that juts out over the side of a canyon in the western area of the Grand Canyon. This major attraction opened back in 2007, and has seen visitors flocking to the remote location ever since. The vertical drop from the skywalk to the edge on the canyon could be as much as 880 feet. When walking on the Skywalk, you are 4,770 feet above sea level, and the Colorado River far below at the base of the canyon is at 1,160 feet above sea level. Enjoy uninterrupted views over one of the United States most iconic landmarks, and gaze down into the canyon through the clear floor of the Skywalk. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is connected to Kingman via county highways Stockton Hill Road and Peirce Ferry Road which land you on a partly gravel road called Diamond Bar Road, which lasts for 21 miles (9 unpaved) until you arrive where the Skywalk is located.
Grand Canyon Caverns
If heights are not your thing, then perhaps going underground would be a better way to spend the day. The Grand Canyon Caverns are the largest dry caverns in the United States, and they are still being explored, which means they could well be the largest in the world. Back in 1927, a man called Walter Peck almost fell down a hole in the ground, and that was how the caverns were discovered. He bought the land, and after being called a variety of different names, they were renamed the Grand Canyon Caverns in 1962. During the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1963, food and water rations were stored in the cavern, enough to keep 2,000 people alive for two weeks, and they still sit there for visitors to see to this day.
Keepers of the Wild Nature Park
A visit to the Keepers of the Wild Nature Park is a great place to spend a day, especially if you have kids. The park is run and managed by a non-profit organization that protects abandoned, abused, and neglected animals, and also works to preserves and protect wildlife and the natural environment. All the animals kept here are permanent residents, and the workers at the park try to educate visitors about how animals are exploited and what can be done about it. There are all sorts of animals at the park, from lions and tigers to baboons and parrots. Close to Kingman, just head 30 miles along East Highway 66 to reach the park.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area
For a day out in the great outdoors, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers a huge area, almost one and a half million acres, that is perfect for getting away from it all. Lake Mead was created by the building of the Hoover Dam, and now the lake is used for a variety of recreational activities, like swimming, fishing, and boating. There are 900 different species of plant in the park, and 500 different animal species call the park home.
Best Ways to Get Around
Being slap bang on the historic Route 66 and Interstate 40, Kingman is well connected. Getting to and from most of these places can be a little difficult without your own transport. Of course, you always have the option of using a taxi, but that can end up being an expensive and irritating option. If you haven’t driven to Kingman, but instead arrived by train or plane, then consider hiring a car. All of the attractions and places listed here really are easier to see by car, and hiring a vehicle in Kingman is simple enough. All of these places can be easily visited in a day, so you can leave in the morning and be back by dinner time. So if you are feeling like a day out away from the city, you don’t have to venture far to find the fun you are looking for!
